BAKKEN SHALE

Located in North Dakota and extending into Montana, the Bakken Shale is named after Henry Bakken, a farmer in Tioga, ND, who discovered the formation while drilling for oil on his own land. In recent years, the Bakken formation has emerged as one of the most important sources of new oil production in the US. Production exceeding 1 million barrels a day, North Dakota has become the second-largest oil-producing state in the US, behind only Texas.

MARCELLUS & Utica SHALE

Found throughout the Allegheny Plateau region of the northern Appalachian Basin, the Marcellus Shale runs across the southern regions of New York, in northern and western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, western Maryland and throughout most of West Virginia extending across state lines into western Virginia. Although being one of the smallest plays for oil in the nation, the Marcellus Shale has become the largest source of natural gas is the US encompassing around 104,000 square miles.

HAYNESVILLE SHALE

Located in southwest Arkansas, northwest Louisiana and East Texas, the Haynesville Shale underlies an area of about 9,000 square miles. It has become one of the most prolific natural gas formations in the United States. The Haynesville Shale came into prominence in 2008 and has been estimated to have 75 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas, second only to the Marcellus Formation.
